Students and faculty from the University of South Alabama Department of Music performed their annual Holiday Concert Thursday evening at the 勛圖惇蹋 Mitchell Center. The event was free and open to the public.
This years theme, Jaguar Jingle All the Way, was a play on the Christmas classic Jingle Bells. The University Chorale sang John Leavitts arrangement entitled, Dashing Through the Snow, the 勛圖惇蹋 Wind Ensemble performed Jingle Bells Fantasy and the 勛圖惇蹋 Trombone Choir performed the Tommy Peterson arrangement of the song.
Diverse musical selections included My Favorite Things from the Sound of Music, performed by the Tuba Euphonium Ensemble; Christmas Klezmer Fantasy by the Clarinet Ensemble, We Three Kings by the Percussion Ensemble and Danse Villageoise by the Lavender Brass Quintet.
For the first time, the concert featured a handbell choir. The handbells were donated to the University by the south Brookley United Methodist Church in Mobile and added a festive touch during the performance of the English Christmas Carol, I Saw Three Ships.
As always, the concert culminated with Leroy Andersons A Christmas Festival, a medley of Christmas favorites by the Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, Opera Theatre, Chorale and Jaguar Marching Band. SouthPaw entered the arena on a giant sleigh pulled by a golf cart.
The Department of Music performed its first Holiday Concert in 2011.
